Beyond the Barn: Agency's Hidden Gems

When guests first arrive at Bro Barn, many never want to leave the property. We completely understand that impulse. The pasture views, the alpacas, and the quiet evenings around the fire pit create a bubble of peace that city life simply cannot replicate.
But part of what makes a farm stay in Agency, Missouri so special is what waits just beyond our driveway. Over the years we have curated a list of local spots that we personally recommend to every guest who asks what else there is to explore nearby.
The Appeal of Agency, Missouri
Agency is a small unincorporated community in Buchanan County, tucked into the rolling hills northwest of Kansas City. It is the kind of place where the post office still knows your name and the pace of life moves with the seasons rather than against them.
What surprises many of our guests is how accessible this rural pocket feels. You can leave the congestion of the city behind on a Friday afternoon and be watching alpacas graze by dinner time. That proximity to Kansas City combined with the deep quiet of the countryside is what makes Agency such a well-kept secret.

Scenic Drives and Back Roads
Some of the best experiences near Agency do not require a destination at all. The back roads winding through Buchanan County offer miles of uninterrupted farmland, creek crossings, and canopy tunnels formed by old-growth trees.
We always tell guests to take the long way back from any outing. Rolling down the windows and letting the Missouri breeze fill the car is a simple pleasure that resets the nervous system in ways a spa never quite manages.
Best Times for a Country Drive
- Early morning drives catch fog rolling off the fields and soft golden light.
- Late afternoon routes reward you with some of the best sunsets in northwest Missouri.
- Fall drives reveal vibrant foliage along the wooded stretches near the property.
- Avoid Sunday evenings in summer when farm traffic picks up on the main routes.
Nearby St. Joseph for Supplies and Culture
Roughly twenty minutes north of Free Bird Farms sits St. Joseph, a historic river town with everything you might need for a weekend stay and plenty worth exploring for its own sake. It is our go-to recommendation for guests who want a half-day excursion without committing to a full city trip.
St. Joseph sits along the Missouri River and carries a rich frontier history. The downtown district features restored architecture, local breweries, and antique shops that reward slow browsing. We have spent many afternoons ourselves wandering the historic streets and still find something new each visit.

What to Stock Up On
- Local Missouri produce from the St. Joseph farmers market on Saturday mornings.
- Freshly roasted coffee from independent roasters in the downtown district.
- Regional barbecue supplies and sauces to bring back for an evening grill session.
- Artisan baked goods for a no-effort breakfast the next morning at the barn.
Nature and Outdoor Exploration
The land around Agency is crisscrossed with opportunities for low-key outdoor activity. You do not need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy what this corner of Missouri has to offer. The terrain is gentle, the trails are uncrowded, and the wildlife is abundant.
We frequently spot deer, wild turkeys, and red-tailed hawks right from the Bro Barn patio. Guests who venture a little farther find creek beds worth wading in during summer and quiet fishing spots that rarely see another angler.

Returning to the Barn
The beauty of exploring Agency's hidden gems is knowing that Bro Barn waits at the end of every outing. There is something deeply satisfying about returning from a day of discovery to a warm, beautifully appointed space where dinner can be prepped in a custom copper kitchen and evening drinks shared around the fire pit.
Jana and I designed Free Bird Farms to be the kind of place you look forward to coming back to, not just the place you sleep between activities. That balance of outward exploration and inward comfort is what turns a good weekend into a memorable one.
